3 out of 5 stars what heavy drug use creates   September 5, 2010

Is it bad? No. But when you have their first 6 albums as precedent, only one song holds up to it: Achilles Last Stand. Still a listenable album, but like I said, average compared to their previous releases. Its too bad Page had to get so addicted to heroin.

3 out of 5 stars Led Zeppelin: Against the Ropes   August 15, 2010

Led Zeppelin are legendary. However, Presence is sub-par for a band of so much talent. Achilles Last Stand is GREAT. The rest of the album lacks power. Presence is the closest thing to a Led Zeppelin "Jam" album. The musicianship is great but the songs dont gel into classics. Had Led Zeppelin taken another eighteen days to record, Presence might have been a different story.

4 Stars? Really? Not a bad album? Really? These type of reviews are written by people who THINK they know alot about music. You know the type. Their favorite songs are like Hotel California, Freebird, Turn the Page.... You know, the songs that have been played to death. If you ask one of these lemmings what his/her favorite song on Presence is, the answer is invariably "Nobody's Fault But Mine" Why? Because that's the one that gets played on the radio and that's the one they know some of the words to. Is Mozart's 38th Symphony 4 stars because his 40th is more well known. Of course not. Everything we have from Mozart is cherished, and years from now, generations from now, everything from Led Zeppelin will be cherished as well.

4 out of 5 stars achilles heel   May 6, 2010

I would have to say that this is one very enjoyable album for any fan of Zep. It gets ignored because there were so many bigger albums and songs. That's the beauty of this one. Presence has kind of a fun, jam like quality to it. The only epic piece being achilles last stand which personally find boring. The influences are a lot more obvious on this album, you can hear the elvis, the james brown etc. The playing is very tight and it's not overproduced. More of a musician's album...

5 out of 5 stars Overlooked   April 1, 2010

1976's PRESENCE by Led Zeppelin was recorded right after the huge success of Physical Graffiti, and its sound is in total contrast to that album. I think that it's a good thing, though. What I appreciate about this album is its simplicity. It consists of Jimmy's guitar, John Baldwin's bass, and John Bonham's intense drumming. Bonham shines on this album, especially on ACHILLE'S LAST STAND. I really dig his fills on that song, and the rest of the album, for that matter. PRESENCE had the misfortune to be released in the same year as THE SONG REMAINS THE SAME (live album), which affected sales. However, we're talking about Led Zeppelin here, and everything they've touched has turned into gold, eventually. It took many years for the critics and the public to get on board Zeppelin III, and that album is considered a fine work, and a classic. PRESENCE is blues-oriented, and has their roots embedded for the 7 tracks. This was an important release, because it is considered to be the album that kept the band together after Plant's accident in 1975, and as it turns out, the last album until 1979's IN THROUGH THE OUT DOOR, which followed tragic events in Plant's life, and the resulting time off. I like the whole album, especially TEA FOR ONE, ACHILLE'S LAST STAND, FOR YOUR LIFE, and ROYAL ORLEANS. Overall, PRESENCE is a good album. Sometimes something that's thrown together can be better than something that's carefully planned. This was a great effort under extenuating circumstances. 9.5/10
