| Customer Reviews: Great value, though more chants would be nice July 17, 2009 A reviewer (California, USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This album is undoubtedly a great deal as far as money goes. Even if you don't like half of the songs on here, there are still 50 others that you will enjoy. I appreciate the diversity, with traditions from multiple faiths and regions being represented. I am really only familiar with chants in the Christian tradition, in which there is also great diversity (monastic traditions, gospel, some of Hildegard von Bingen's songs, etc.), so I appreciated being exposed to some new music.
My one complaint is the same one that others have noticed: many of the songs are NOT chants. Some songs are missing vocals altogether, which I think are a necessary element for a chant. This Little Light of Mine is not a chant.
Nonetheless, great music for those of a religious or spiritual mindset, world music fans, or those who just want something to chill to.
Not What I Expected July 2, 2009 D. Hansen (UT) 2 out of 6 found this review helpful
I understand that there are samples to listen to here but with 99 songs is it worth the time? In this case YES. As it is titled "99 Essential Chants" I assumed this would be Gregorian Chants (as the first few tracks, and their samples, suggest) but that is not the case. I guess you could technically call all of these chants but very few of them (not even 25% are). Beware of this. If you want these feel free to buy it but I think the title is quite misleading since I was only interested in the Gregorian chants and none of the others.
loose definition of chant but a plesantly diverse collection June 21, 2009 ginntonic (Philadelphia) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This could stand alone as a nice collection of sacred choral music. It is fortunately much more than that. Sure there are "chants" on this one ala Monastic chorales of several faiths but there is music in this collection that I would not term "chant" music - yet we are lucky to have it included. The tracks by Tekameli are wonderful gems and more in the Gypsy/Folk genre. Also noteworthy are the 2 tracks by Tonana - Contemporary Mexican New Age - very intimate and meditative while not at all chanty to me. Overall a pleasantly diverse collection...and a steal as a 99 cent download.
Unbelievable June 21, 2009 Nils Gums (Los Angeles, CA) I can't believe that each song is only 1 cent... Love amazon's daily deals! I bought this for my father as he is the one who introduced me to classical music at an early age. This may end up being a great father's day gift, too! Almost 100 songs for under 1 buck! Crazy!?
Except for the vocals, I love these chants! June 20, 2009 The Only Reviewer That Matters 2 out of 19 found this review helpful
These chants are lovely except for the vocals. Take out the vocals and these chants would be lovely.
