Words can't describe how great this record is. Not one song is bad, every is an instant classic. Album of the year. No doubt. Welcome back Fear Factory. Metal sorely needed you.

5 out of 5 stars The truth hurts my ears when I listen to Mechanize on full blast   July 28, 2010

I have been a Fear Factory fan since I was first introduced to the band by my best friend. My first FF album was obsolete and I continued to collect along the way with no disappointment. I have read reviews on other cds these guys came out with and nearly laughed myself into a comma with all the whining and crying about how their band isn't the same as it used to be, don't people have enough problems in life? or do they really need every little thing to bother and upset them? Anyway enough thinking outside the box. I enjoyed this cd from start to finish and still do I can't seem to overplay it enough the lyrics are just as good if not better than the first FF cd I ever heard. They may hurt the ears when listened to on full blast though but, it's worth it to almost go deaf to the pounding sounds of such a good band. It's best to buy this cd on a whim without hearing any of the songs first who needs to preview music? it's entertainment if you take it too seriously you might start crying like some of the other babies out there, need I say more?

4 out of 5 stars It's Fear Factory   July 20, 2010

Mechanize is the next step forward for Fear Factory. I've heard some people describe this album as somewhere between Demanufacture and Obsolete, but I would have to disagree. It really sounds like the continuing evolution of Fear Factory's unique sound, following Archetype and Transgression. You may or may not know, but following the less-than-stellar album Digimortal, Fear Factory disbanded only to regroup later minus lead guitarist Dino Cazares (whom lead singer Burton had some trouble with), bumping bassist Christian to guitars and adding Byron Stroud (of Strapping Young Lad) to bass duty. The new line up sounded good, but a little different as Christian plays different than Dino. I really enjoyed Demanufacture (the first FF album I bought) and Obsolete. Digimortal was alright, but didn't wow me like the other two. With the new line up, their next album Archetype was a big improvement over Digimortal, and was a big leap in the right direction. Transgression was a dissapointment for me, althought it had a few good songs. Then nothing happened for a while. Well, it turns out after Transgression, singer Burton reconciled with old FF guitarist Cazares and formed a new FF minus drummer Raymond and guitarist Christian (allegedly behind their backs?), adding drummer Gene Hoglan (also of Strapping Young Lad).

Because I came in on FF with the line up of Burton, Dino, Christian, and Raymond, that is to me the real FF. The second line up felt like it was missing Dino, and the newest line up feels like it's missing Raymond and Christian. So why am I rambling on like this? Well, if (like me) you've been a FF fan for a while, you've noticed their sound changing and evolving along with their line up. As a metal album, Mechanize is amazing. As a FF album, it's very, very good, but somehow feels like it's missing something, and I believe that something is Christian and Raymond.

Burton's vocals on Mechanize are great, and not over-produced like Digimortal and Transgression. Burton is THE voice of FF, and without him it wouldn't be FF.
Dino's guitars are some of the best he's done for FF, and the riffs are tight and catchy. The tunes will get into your head and you will headbang.
Byron's bass is good, and since this is his third FF album, he definately knows what he's doing. I have noticed there isn't as much emphasis on bass as earlier albums like Obsolete (which would occasionally single out the bass to great effect), and I kind of miss that.
Gene's drumming is insane. His style is different than Raymond's, and it changes the sound that FF has had since 1989. Gene does a great job of fitting his style into the FF sound that has become so loved, and a kudos to him for making it work. Also, it might be my imagination, but I think Gene might play faster and tighter than Raymond, which is saying something because Raymond is a fantastic drummer.

As a stand alone album, Mechanize is filled with nothing but solid songs. There isn't a bad one among the bunch. This could also be their most driving album, with a constant emphasis on speed and crushing riffs coupled with brutal vocals.

As a FF album, it takes the FF sound a step in a new direction while also learning from the mistakes of the past. Because of the line up change, they sound different, but also fresh, and that's a good thing. The only thing holding it back from being on the top teir like Demanufacture and Obsolete is the variety. All of the songs on Mechanize stay in the safe zone. Their isn't as much experimentation and variety as their best albums, and as such the songs aren't as memorable and unique.

Should you buy this album? Hell, yeah! It's a solid album that no FF fan should be without. Is it the new Demanfacture? No. But it doesn't need to be. And at least it won't leave you with that sour taste in your mouth that Transgression did.

1 out of 5 stars I'm not impressed, where's the limp bizkit please?   July 9, 2010

Why are these ancient dinosaurs still around? I remember a time when heavy metal ruled! You had bands like limp bizkit, korn, slipknot, coal chamber, distubred, etc... ruling the airways.....now all these JUNK old bands are trying to make comebacks. Fear Factory is NOT heavy people! If you want heavy listen to "faith" by Limp Bizkit, "last resort" by papa roach, or anything by the ultra heavy death metal band of Kittie.

Avoid stupid comebacks of the past few years like 80s bands Ratt, Exodus, and Testament and stick with good NEW music such as Limp Bizkit!
